Pogonomyrmex californicus — bicolor form. The bicolored color morph of the California harvester: a warm red head and thorax over a darker gaster, from the californicus group. An active, rewarding harvester with real character.
- You'll receive: a fresh-caught, mated queen with brood.
- Founding: Semi-claustral — unlike fully claustral desert harvesters, this queen needs to eat while raising her first workers. Offer small feeder insects and a little sugar during founding; don't seal her away without food.
- Diet: Granivore — a seed mix is the staple, plus insect protein for the brood.
- Range: California and the arid Southwest.
- Difficulty: Intermediate — easy-going once established, but the semi-claustral start needs attention.
- Heads up: A true harvester with a potent sting — handle with care.
