Shipping: UPS/FedEx 2-Day, $20 flat — free on orders over $120. Live arrival guaranteed.

Formica perpilosa — a quick, glossy field ant of the desert Southwest, offered as a colony. Fast on its feet, bold at the feeder, and one of the most forgiving Formica you can keep: no sting, just a spray of formic acid when provoked.

• You'll receive: a colony with queen, workers, and brood, past the founding stage.
• Temperament: Active and visible. Formica are daytime foragers that put on a show in the outworld.
• Diet: Sugars and nectar plus insect protein. Hearty eaters that grow fast when fed well.
• Range: Arid Southwest of the U.S., usually near water.
• Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate.
• Winter: Benefits from a cool dormant period each year.
