Colony Size

Dorymyrmex bicolor — the bicolored pyramid ant, offered as a polygynous variety: multiple queens can be raised together for a faster, more resilient start. Named for the small cone-shaped “pyramid” on each worker's back, these are blisteringly fast, sugar-loving ants that build busy, endlessly active colonies.

  • Choose your colony size: 1, 2, or 3 fresh-caught queens with brood — priced per group below.
  • Polygyny: Multiple foundresses cohabit — more queens, faster early growth.
  • Founding: Fully claustral — queens raise their first workers on their own reserves.
  • Diet: Sugar-hungry — keep nectar or sugar water always available, plus insect protein for brood.
  • Signature: the propodeal “pyramid,” and crater-shaped nest entrances in the wild.
  • No sting: dolichoderines defend chemically — harmless to keepers.
  • Difficulty: Beginner–Intermediate — fast-growing and forgiving, but keep the setup sealed; they're quick.
