Founding the Colony
Fully claustral — the queen can raise her first workers entirely on her own, though some keepers offer a few seeds or small insects every two to three weeks during founding. Keep her dark and undisturbed in a test tube with a water reservoir.
Feeding
A seed-based diet — keep a harvester seed mix available, supplemented with insect protein and the occasional sugar water. Like other harvesters, they grind seeds into a stored “ant bread.”
Heating & Setup
One of the more heat-tolerant harvesters — a warm, dry gradient up to about 90°F suits them. They prefer deep, dry nesting and are comfortable foraging in the heat.
Growth & What to Expect
Moderate growth, but the large, powerful workers make for an impressive colony. Hardy and drought-adapted — just respect the potent bite and sting. Hibernation isn't required, though an optional 6–8 week diapause in late autumn mirrors their natural cycle.
