Founding the Colony
Fully claustral. This species is facultatively polygynous — coastal concolor populations especially will accept multiple cooperating queens (pleometrosis), which speeds early growth. Keep the founding setup undisturbed, and once workers arrive, offer a little sand or soil; they are enthusiastic diggers and will often move brood into it.
Feeding
A true seed specialist. Keep a small-seed harvester mix (chia, poppy, grass seeds) available at all times — they eat more seed than Messor. Add insect protein for brood development and a little sugar water for an energy boost.
Heating & Setup
Warm and dry, around 80–88°F over a gradient, ideally with bright light. They are day-active foragers that build deep nests in the wild, so a dry, sandy setup suits them well.
Growth & What to Expect
Moderate to fast growth with active, visible foraging. An excellent stepping stone into US harvesters — just remember the potent sting and set up the outworld so you can work without being stung.
