Founding the Colony
Pheidole xerophila founds fully claustrally — seal the queen in a dark test tube with a water reservoir and leave her undisturbed until the first workers appear. Once she has a few minors, growth takes off quickly.
Feeding
A granivore that loves protein. Keep a seed mix on hand and offer insect protein regularly — fruit flies, small feeders — to fuel brood and those big-headed majors.
Heating & Setup
True to its name (“dry-loving”), keep it warm and dry — around 80–86°F over part of the nest with a cooler gradient. A simple, roomy setup suits this hardy desert species well.
Growth & What to Expect
Fast. Like most Pheidole, a settled colony grows explosively into a busy, populous nest with a lively mix of minors and majors. Steady heat and protein are the keys.
