Honeypot Ant Care Guide (Myrmecocystus melliger)
MELLIGER HONEYPOT CARE GUIDE
Myrmecocystus melliger · one of the largest honeypots in the hobby, famous for big golden repletes.
Founding the Colony
Myrmecocystus melliger founds fully claustrally. Settle your queen in a dark, quiet test tube or founding chamber and leave her be. She raises her first workers entirely on her own reserves, so there is no need to feed her until they appear. The single biggest cause of lost honeypot queens is a keeper who checks too often. Look rarely, disturb less.
Feeding
Once workers arrive, honeypots run on sugar. Keep nectar or sugar water available at all times. The repletes depend on a steady carbohydrate supply, and melliger is famous for how large and golden they get in a well-fed colony. Add insect protein (fruit flies, small crickets, pieces of mealworm) regularly to fuel the brood and the queen's laying. Pull uneaten protein within a day so nothing molds.
Heat & Humidity
Keep part of the nest warm at 24 to 30°C with a cooler zone around 18 to 22°C so the colony can regulate itself. Like all our desert species, honeypots want a humid nest at 80%+ and a dry outworld. As the colony grows, give it a vertical nest surface: melliger's oversized repletes need a ceiling to hang from.
What Makes Melliger Special
Size. Melliger is one of the largest honeypot ants you can keep, and its repletes swell into big amber lanterns that make an established colony a genuine showpiece. It is the species for the keeper who wants the full honeypot spectacle and is willing to give a founding queen the patience to get there.
